London's Fashionable Clubs in 1900: The Athenaeum
This is what Arthur H. Beavan had to say about the Athenaeum Club, in Imperial London, published in 1901:
On the south side of Pall Mall, at the corner of Waterloo Place, is the Athenaeum
club, whose members are chiefly bishops, literary men, Cabinet ministers, etc.
It is said to have the best club library in London.
A story has been added to the building, which hardly improves its strictly classical
style of architecture; but a billiard-room, a smoking-room, and a suite of bedrooms
were imperatively called for, in order that the club, otherwise comfortable, handsomely
furnished, and provided with most requisites, should be in keeping with modern
ideas.
A formidable number of distinguished people appear in the list of the original
members of this club: the Earl of Aberdeen, Sir Francis Burdett, Thomas Campbell
(the poet), Sir Astley Cooper, Isaac D'Israeli, Charles Kemble, Thomas Moore (the
poet), Viscount Palmerston, and Mulready and Leslie (the painters).
