London's Fashionable Clubs in 1900: The Carlton Clubs
Arthur H. Beavan continued his survey of London Clubs, in Imperial London, published in 1901, with this look at the Carlton Clubs:
There are two Carlton clubs in Pall Mall, on different sides of the road; the
elder distinguishable by its red granite pillars, while the Junior Carlton is
a big handsome building at the corner of St. James' Square.
The elder, known as the Carlton, is essentially a political and conservative club,
membership of which is difficult to obtain, names being on the candidate-list
for years and years, often without success.
Of Italian and grandiose exterior, it is sumptuous within; with splendid hall
and staircase, and dining-room, drawing-room, smoking-room, etc, of equal luxuriousness
and comfort.
The Junior Carlton is no less comfortable, but has not the high tone of its
parent club.
