City of London Churches in 1900: St Stephen Walbrook
Arthur H. Beavan continued his survey of City of London Churches in Imperial London, first published in London and New York in 1901, with this brief look at St Stephen Walbrook:
The beautiful church of St. Stephen's, Walbrook, abutting on the Mansion House,
is considered the finest extant example of Wren's work, with the exception of
St. Paul's, as a test for the building of which cathedral it is said he planned
St. Stephen's dome.
With its well-proportioned Corinthian columns and central cupola of timber supported
upon a circle of arches that spring from the columns, the fine carvings on its
altar-screen, organ-case, and pulpit, it is one of the sights of the city.
