Literary London: Vanity Fair
Becky Sharp is introduced to us at Minerva House, Chiswick Mall (of which many
existing houses there are typical), Miss Pinkerton's Academy for young ladies.
In Russell Square lived Amelia's father, John Sedley, Esq., of the Stock
Exchange, while the Osbornes resided in the same square at No. 96, opposite.
Sir Pitt Crawley dwelt in Great Gaunt Street, near Gaunt (Manchester) Square,
whose lease and furniture the unfortunate Raggles bought, "a snug and complete
bachelor's residence, lately the residence of the Honourable Frederick Deuceacre,
gone abroad."
Colonel Rawdon Crawley and his wife Becky we find at 201, Curzon Street, Mayfair,
a very small comfortable house where they lived on credit and entertained the
Marquis of Steyne, etc.
